I loved my time at UL in the MA Songwriting programme!

The MA Songwriting was exactly the program I was looking for when I found it. I was given the tools I needed to develop my skills as a songwriter and the space I needed to develop my voice as an artist. Carl Corcoran was an amazing supervisor who was always available to offer assistance or support. I had the opportunity to perform, to record, and to collaborate across multiple artistic disciplines. The people in my program became close friends who I still talk to and collaborate with, even years after the program has ended.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure to take advantage of all the wonderful programs that UL International has to offer to help you get integrated. I met the love of my life at the first UL International Students' Day in September!

University of Limerick - If you're on the fence, absolutely go!

I went to UL from 2015-2016 on a study abroad from Texas State University to explore Ireland and see the rest of the EU and I genuinely credit the experience to shaping what my world view is today.

I played rugby, surfed, hiked the peaks of multiple counties, and drank and laughed at the largest and smallest pubs in the country while getting to learn and work with one of the most diverse cohorts in all of Ireland. I plan to go back once every few years just to hike and have fun with old friends.

I enjoyed my time there so much, I went back to get my MSc from 2019-2020! My second experience had me living in the city, away from campus for a year and to this day I get remarks on how it has made my resume/CV stand out amongst the crowd.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Use your time wisely when in the EU. Being from the USA, it's easy to get caught in the bubble that is your state. European countries are state sized compared to us and their accessibility from Ireland is unbelievably affordable and easy.

With approval to turn in work digitally, myself and two friends took off for 2 weeks to take a trip to the Netherlands, Belgium, and Hungary and the tickets were under $500. Combine that with the ridiculously low prices of hostels, and you can easily make the trip on a budget. We averaged around 25k steps a day and got to see and experience so many different cultures. The food was definitely the highlight!

I think it took me like 6 months to pay that credit card bill off, but it was completely worth it.

Also go to Inis Mor!! It's like a mini Cliffs of Moher with 0 tourists!!! Take the weekend to stay there if you have the opportunity.

Study Abroad in the University of Limerick, Ireland for a Year

I studied abroad in Limerick,, Ireland, in Spring 2019 and Fall 2019. Study abroad is undoubtedly a fun experience but what we sometimes forget is that it is also a journey towards becoming a global citizen. This hard-fought journey exposes us to the lights and shadows of this world. My study abroad university, the University of Limerick, Ireland, ranks number 2 for international student happiness. Immersing myself in the diversity of the University, I was able to form a global network spanning from the west to the east.

One of my absolute favorite things was the mixture of roommates I had in the house included in the package price. I had roommates from Sweden, Australia, Nigeria, Dubai, and different parts of the US and India. Small moments of awkwardness were the biggest learning opportunities. This has given me the privilege to travel like a local with friends I made worldwide.

On a less deep note, the myriad of courses available makes it very easy to select courses and stay on track for graduation. Moreover, a lot of Americans were shocked by the minimal pressure of work. Most of the grades are focused on one or two big projects or exams instead of a cumulative approach.

Lastly, the weather in Ireland is always a bittersweet debate with my friends. As a fan of rainy weather, Ireland is my haven. However, I agree that it does make walking to classes and traveling a bit hectic at times but still eventful. Overall, this was indeed a life-changing experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
In Ireland, you will experience several kinds of weather in one day. It rains almost everyday so prepare accordingly.

My home away from home!

I studied abroad at UL in the spring of 2019. My second week of the program, my grandmother (my best friend) passed away from a sudden heart attack. I wanted to go back home immediately but I decided to stay and it is hands down the best decision I have ever made, second only to my decision to attend college in the first place. I knew it was going to be difficult to be away from my family, friends, and home university for a semester, but my grandmother's passing made it even harder to be away from the familiar and comforting.

I will never forget the willingness the Study Abroad staff showed to support me before and after my grandmother's passing. There were countless afternoon conversations over tea, walks around campus, and helpful nudges in the right direction in the weeks following my arrival in Ireland. I truly do not think I would have stayed if it hadn't been for them.

My flatmates and the other friends I had already made in my first week of the program were also a major reason why I decided to stay. They are also the reason that my time was so enjoyable, even when it was hard. Without hesitation, they scooped me up and reminded me what it felt like to be happy again. I will never forget the nights spent at home watching bad movies, the takeout we ate by the river, and every single Friday night at Stables.

Above all, my time at UL gave me relationships that I will have for the rest of my life. The friends I made in Limerick are friends I still have today. We talk or video chat at least once a month despite all of the different timezones! I truly could not have asked for a better experience and I am grateful each and every day that I went to Ireland and most of all, that I decided to stay. Thank you, UL!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try everything. Join clubs and societies, hang out at Stables or in the library, make friends with the staff in your village, go to free events and all of the trips the Study Abroad office puts together for you! Meet as many people as you can and do as much as you can. It may seem overwhelming or like you can't handle it at first, but all too soon you'll be comfortable and your time in Limerick will almost be over. Put yourself out there and you'll be surprised what can happen!

My 2 Year Masters Experience at UL

I loved my experience at UL, and mostly because I found myself surrounded by wonderful people, from my course, my on-campus apartment, and different societies. No matter what you're studying, I would recommend trying to get involved in societies to meet people!! My personal favourite was the outdoor pursuits club, which goes on hikes and climbs around Ireland on the weekends (as well as offers weekly climbing wall sessions).

To keep it brief, I studied at both Trinity in Dublin and the University of Limerick (UL) and preferred UL for several reasons, as follows:

- More authentic Irish feel vs big city feel. You're a bus ride away from Limerick city centre so you cannot walk there, but UL is a gorgeous campus and almost feels American in the sense that it has a lot of amenities on campus such as a pizza place, SPAR, pub, bank, etc. Also great campus for sports/gym use and walks around the grounds. In Dublin, it is very easy to lose the Irish culture and feel, but Limerick is more rural and felt more authentic to me - also get a different variety of accents (and county colours... but I'll let you figure that one out yourself :))
- I found it easier to integrate into Irish culture & society and meet/befriend Irish people but also had wide community of international friends on weekends since most Irish students go home
- The on-campus pub Stables is so FUN. (also, the chicken fillet rolls are to die for!!!)
- The international team is much more supportive at UL - they plan events and make it easy to get involved and make you feel heard and included in campus life (I felt none of this at Trinity).
- Limerick provides access to most major Irish cities and is a cute city in itself, but it is harder to access mainstream Europe because the closest airport is Shannon and Dublin is a bigger airport. This is only relevant if you'd prefer to travel Europe - for me I wanted to travel Ireland and I found Limerick was better for that than say, Dublin, in many ways because it's closer to spots like the Ring of Kerry and Cliffs of Moher, which people usually love (though my favourite was always Killaloe!!)
- Admin and wait times are slower in Ireland than in the states just in general - no matter the university - but immigration and the like tends to be easier in Limerick than in Dublin just because it is smaller and the International team is able to help you.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Important to get involved as much as you can, and say yes to everything!!! Try new things, sign up for trips on your own, you never know where life will take you! I have made some incredible friends at UL from all over Ireland and feel like it has been the greatest Irish experience I could have asked for, all while studying to get my degree too.

Alumni Interviews

Why did you choose this program?

I chose the MSc Marketing, Consumption, and Society program because I loved the business classes I took when I studied abroad and knew a degree from Kemmy Business school would be internationally accredited and indicate high quality. The program is cost and time-efficient, as it is a one-year full time, as opposed to the typical two-year graduate programs in the USA with higher tuition fees.

While some modules are grounded in theory, others teach through real-life experiences. I created several marketing campaigns for local businesses in County Clare and County Galway.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

UL International prepared me by sending helpful pre-departure emails about the campus, Irish culture, things to do before and after arriving, etc. They offered a free airport pick up as well, which I was grateful for when I was a study abroader with little travel experience. On-campus resources like the First 7 Weeks help you know all there is to know about UL along with UL Student Life.

I booked my accommodation on my own online through Campus Life Services.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Focus on doing well in your classes, but find a balance between work and fun. I met some of my BEST friends through this course and while I'm thrilled to have my master's, I'm even more grateful for the friends I made through it.

I also made time to travel on the weekends. If you make the choice to study in Ireland, make time to see as much of it as you can because there's no other place like it <3 The experiences I had through UL's clubs and societies like Outdoor Pursuits, International Society and Surf Club, allowed me to meet people and do things I could never have done had I stayed in Illinois.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I spent a few hours a day in the classroom and a few in the library. There's a mix of group and individual work in your modules and, of course, the middle and end of the semester tend to be busier with deadlines.

I would get a few hours of work during the week or on the weekends when I wasn't in class. I would make dinner with my friends in Thomond Village in the evening, or go to the Sports Arena to exercise or to the Stables/Scholars for pints and music. I went for walks along the Shannon River on campus and traveled on weekends!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I was scared to uproot my life in the USA and move somewhere I didn't know anyone. I had to trust that I was making the right choice for myself and commit to it. I learned to start conversations, put myself out there and not let the fear of what might or might not happen to keep me from doing something amazing! I learned that when you go outside of your comfort zone, you have to practice patience and trust that things will work out the way they are supposed to. If you think you need help, ask for it!

There are so many people at UL who really care about you and want you to feel supported.

Why did you chose Ireland and why UL?

Ireland is a beautiful and historic country filled with the kindest people, the best music, and so much to see/do.

Limerick is near the Wild Atlantic Way and is big enough to be exciting yet small enough to make you feel part of a community, of which UL is very much connected to. The campus is only a ten-minute taxi ride from town and there are several bus stops on campus.

As an international student, I really felt like I was given everything I needed to be successful in my time at UL. Campus is so much fun with lots to do. The student-led clubs and societies are brilliant and the newly renovated library is huge and modern. What I especially love about UL are the people who make it such a special place to be. Ireland will always be my favorite place in the world, and Limerick will always be home.

I miss it every day!

Niamh Kavanagh

Job Title
International Student Recruitment Officer for North and South America
Niamh grew up in a small village in Ireland; the only three reasons you would find yourself in Niamh’s home village are: you live there, you are visiting someone who lives there or, you are completely lost.

Niamh loves all sports and started playing rugby at University, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Law & Tax, Niamh realized she was not suited to sit behind a desk for her career and went on to do a Masters in Marketing and Management.

After playing International 15s and 7s rugby for a number of years with Ireland and working with International students, Niamh joined the UL Team, where she is the International Student Recruitment Officer for North and South America at the University of Limerick since 2017. Niamh loves her job, as she gets help students to figure out their future careers and gets to travel a lot to meet new people and experience different cultures.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favourite travel memory is from a trip where I traveled to Italy with the Irish Team to play against Italy in the Six Nations, but this was special game, as we were aiming for winning the tournament and also a grand slam (that is, winning the full tournament with no loses).

The day we arrived, the sun was shining and it was around 22 degrees (celsius) - it was a perfect day for the pre-match warm-up. Overnight the weather changed and it snowed and rained - we played Italy on the coldest day I've ever played rugby in! We still managed to win 6 - 3, which is a very close game in Rugby!

That was the first time Ireland won the Six Nations, and to win it as a grand slam was amazing. We shared the amazing Aer Lingus flight home with fans and an Irish band! All of us singing Irish songs together for the whole flight.

It will be hard to beat a trip like that one.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working for UL has really opened my eyes to the opportunities and support available for students within the University. I have met some inbound UL students and witnessed them becoming independent and mature adults during their time at undergraduate or postgraduate studies. I really love to see students I meet and advise to become successful, and the University of Limerick really supports them through this.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The best story I have heard was from this recent graduate of ours: Ashley. Ashley came to study with us for a semester as a study abroad student, and then last year completed her Masters in Marketing and Management at UL. Ashley loved the work we did at the International office in UL and wanted to work in a similar career. She loved the support we gave to students and the way we advised them on their future studies. Ashley has just started a new job as an international recruitment officer at a University in the USA! We're so proud of her and can't wait to watch her career flourish.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to take a programme at the Irish World Academy for Music and Dance. Full disclosure, I can’t sing or play a musical instrument, but because of the way the Irish World Academy for Music and Dance teaches their students, I would love to experience that too. I'd also love to be able to sing! I'm not too sure if they will be able to teach me this, skill but it would certainly be fun to try.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

There are so many things that I love about UL, but the one thing that makes me super proud is the student experience - we look after our students! I like to say we are their Irish Mums in UL.

Also, we have over 80 different clubs or societies, so there is something for all students to do outside the classroom. My colleague, Liam, is totally going to say that we have an awesome American Football team and we do, but the Rugby Team is totally better (trust me!).

UL is ranked number 1 in the world for student experience and it is because of the student support and student clubs & societies we have. We are very lucky to have this award!

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

The most important factor in UL being successful is our students.

They are amazing students and they are the heart and soul of UL. We are blessed with a beautiful campus in a lovely countryside setting on the banks of the River Shannon. Though only 3 miles from Limerick City, it feels like you are in your own little village. As all students, both domestic and international, live on campus, there is a super atmosphere and a real sense of community
