The Intern Group Programme - Madrid

The Intern Group programme in Madrid was an incredible experience and opportunity for myself. I worked in a forward thinking organisation, on projects involving EU funding, and gained experience in a field I hope to work in. I met friends from all over the world, with whom I have travelled with and hope there will be more adventures to come. This programme has really given me an insight into what I want for my future and the goals I now intend to pursue. It’s a great chance to step out of your comfort zone and push yourself to learn new things. I am grateful for the support and activities organised by Lalita and hope to meet her again when I return to Spain for my future studies.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve wracking moment was meeting my employers for the first time and speaking in Spanish with them. This was challenging and made me feel nervous in my ability to communicate. I overcame this by being calm, talking each task step by step, asking for help where I needed it, and having faith in my ability to learn and improve. My confidence with my Spanish has gotten so much better and I am ready to continue learning this incredible language.

I was able to do a double virtual internship with the Intern Group, and each host company that I was with (one in Dublin, and one in London) were excellent! I learned so much that will help with my career going forward, I've made great connections within the companies I've worked for but also with other interns and supervisors, and have expanded my knowledge of not only the world but my career field. If you have the chance to do an internship with the Intern Group, DO IT!! You will be so thankful and glad that you did.

Valuable and engaging opportunity!

The Intern Group was able to provide me with assistance in finding a placement when I needed it most. I highly recommend their programs for anyone looking for valuable experience and knows how time consuming applying for internships independently can be. The career advancement training, keynote speaker series, and career coaching are highlights of the program that prepare students for the professional world in ways a regular internship just can't.

The staff at the Intern Group were also incredibly helpful- from the online support to engaging with the interns.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Experiencing the placement in person! Unfortunately COVID meant that my placement was conducted remotely and while this had its benefits, it would have been awesome to live and work in a new city.

Hong Kong Social Media Marketing/Research Intern

This experience offered me invaluable amounts of personal and professional growth I wouldn’t have gotten in America. Through this internship I truly learned the meaning of hard work.

The Intern Group staff were always in contact with me assuring me if I needed anything throughout the entirety of the program I could go to them for help which was a big relief.

The housing accommodation was truly amazing and I will cherish and hold the connections I made with everyone for my entire life.

I would definitely recommend anyone thinking of an International Internship to take the opportunity!

What was your funniest moment?
Going out after work with coworkers to celebrate the successful focus group workshops we held and seeing a lighter side of my boss and coworkers was amazing to me.

The Interngroup- Madrid: Review

A famous quote states that “great achievements emerge from great opportunities.”

Whether it was hard-work, effort and dedication, an enormous coincidence of life, destiny itself, or something else, I feel very lucky for the fact that I was given a great opportunity for professional and personal growth.

I could not be more grateful to The Interngroup and The International Business Hub for having so much trust in my abilities, values and in me overall; I hope I can correspond by bringing great results to the table as well.

I am also thankful with the housing administration for paying close attention to the needs and wants of their residents and for keeping a detail-oriented approach to make the experience even better.

It is crucial to mention that I have felt very welcomed and well-treated by the vast majority of people that I’ve met so far here in Madrid, which have been very polite and friendly to me overall. I also hope they can get a positive impression of me in general terms.

I still have a couple of months left in this program, and I am hopeful that by the end of it I can look back and be proud of the professional and personal progress being achieved. Meanwhile, I also desire to explore much more of this wonderful city. Madrid’s prolific monuments, beautiful edifications, delicious food, fascinating landscapes, and unique culture are only some of the things that continue to amaze me every single day.

Going back to the quote from the beginning, I’m aware of the great opportunity I have right here and now as an intern, and I hope to advantage it to the greatest possible extent and be able to make great achievements and reach my goals.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To come here well-prepared, but also with a lot of enthusiasm and self-confidence. Additionally, do not be afraid to act for who you truly are. Last but not least, build a good resume acquire important knowledge and experience, but do not forget to build positive relationships with people that are not afraid to question you and challenge you to be the best version of yourself.

Why did you choose this program?

I graduated in July 2018 and I wanted to gain experience while traveling. Asia is quite strong in the industry I will one day be working for, so this program was an amazing opportunity. The intern group offers lots of destinations and their website is well organized. It was easy to apply and I got a reply the day after. Each program is based on the city you pick and they offer to get you an internship whatever your field is. They’re friendly and for any extra questions, you can contact them by email or Skype.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Being an internship program, the agency helped me with finding an internship role in my career field, an accommodation and they kept in contact with me throughout the whole interview process.

Although I had to sort out the visa myself, they helped me figure out how to fill in the visa application, what kind of visa I needed and what documents I needed in order to apply.

The program includes activities such as trips around near cities, dinners together, Chinese/ language classes, mainstream tourists activities haha and you will be sharing all these adventures with all the other interns too so you are literally never alone.

The guys from the agency here in Shanghai love to organize extra dinners or cinema nights with us as extra activities just to keep in touch with us, which is appreciated by all of us, interns.

I had to sort out my own flight, but as soon as you’re done with that they will organize a taxi ride from the airport to the hotel and vice versa for your departure back home so you don’t have to worry about missing your flights/ finding your accommodation. You get a SIM card organized as well with credit for the first month and a metro card with credit for the first month as well.

In the welcome pack, there’s a bunch of apps they recommend to download.

They won’t tell you to get a VPN, but your workplace probably will.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

The agency explains everything you need to know, they tell you which apps are blocked in China, they organize a language class / cultural class in your first weekend so that if you have questions on how to behave in China you can get answers and tips.

I probably just wished I knew how cool and fashionable people are here.

The only piece of advice is to get a good VPN; even Google is blocked and, trust me, you don’t want to have to research stuff in Chinese on Baidu (well, unless you speak the language).

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I wake up, quick breakfast and then I go to work until 6:30pm, then I usually meet up with few internships to have dinner and a walk around the city, Tianzifang by night is absolutely gorgeous.

We go on an adventure on Saturdays and Sundays. Shanghai is massive and visiting all of it can take quite the time.

Saturday nights we usually go clubbing (and clubbing in Shanghai is an experience as well, haha). It’s great for foreigners and the agency knows few PR’s us interns can ask for deals and free entry clubs.

There are lots to do so we always try to organize things together, but going on exploration alone is something I always do, so some Sundays I just wander by myself.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Personally, I am used to travel to other countries.

I have never been outside Europe before, though, so I didn’t know what to expect. You know, you can read about things and try to imagine, but it is never how you expect it to be so I just let it happen.

I had no fear. I got told that Shanghai is an international and strong city and I just went with it.
It’s a rich city and, although poverty is a reality here as well, I got to realize how safe Shanghai is.
Maybe the only big question in my mind was “what if I don’t like it?”.

Well, guys, at the end it’s only a short amount of time and it’s all experience gained. You might have to stand some behaviors and you have to be understanding of another culture, so it might go against your beliefs and point of views, but traveling is all about adapting and understanding.

Luckily, it’s not my case. Shanghai is amazing and I love the people, the food, everything! It’s a real shame I will have to go back to normal life soon.

I totally recommend visiting Shanghai.

What's your advice to other travelers?

Don’t be afraid to travel. It’s an eye-opening experience and the most interesting people I got to meet were all travelers.

I am from Italy, but I moved to the UK about 6 years ago and I have traveled to Germany a few times and France and places, haha. You get to realize things, seeing the world from different prospectives helps you to understand. I’m glad I went to China, I had no clue what a beautiful place it is and what a culture!

Hopefully, I will be able to explore Japan and South Korea soon too, with all the other countries here in Asia. You’re never too young or too old to visit new places. Mixing an internship experience with traveling was a great idea and not only it looks good on your CV, but it really does improve who you are as a person.

Sau is born and raised in Hong Kong, and has a degree in Asian & International Studies. He loves backpacking in Southeast Asia, and he spent six months living in Singapore. He has been with The Intern Group for 3 years now and is very excited about the launch of the Bangkok program in 2019.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite was travelling to Mrauk-U, Myanmar in 2017. Mrauk-U was an Angkor Wat-like archaeological site, but much untainted. I was always fond of historiography and re-imagining the glory of a fallen kingdom. The trip also took place at a time when there was a huge refugee crisis bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh. It was eye-opening to understand how the locals and the world put the issue in perspective.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I have absolutely grown! I have met people from all walks of life, and picked up important soft skills in communication and emotional intelligence. For the past three years of working in this young, energetic company, I have constantly been reminding myself how to scale up whatever I am doing. It helps me see the bigger picture and be more strategic in planning.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

It is always a delight to hear success stories from our alumni. There was one who won our scholarship and joined a marketing agency in Hong Kong for a short internship. He did so well in the internship which led him an invitation by his supervisor to co-found an AI start-up focusing on chatbot. He is now the CTO, and manages a team of Software Engineers in Pakistan!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Bangkok! This is one of the newest and an excitingly different one from the mainstream destinations. Bangkok is more affordable, English-speaking, environment friendly, and is arguably a working holiday! It is a good place if you are keen about emerging economy. Southeast Asia is the hub for growth in the coming decades!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

The Intern Group is the most diverse in terms of program destinations we offer. Our organization places equal emphasis on interns' professional experience as well as their cultural enrichment. I am most proud when my team goes the extra mile, and surprises our clients with extra benefits. We are looking for not only a deal, but a friendship that lasts.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

As a company in the service industry, good customer service is always the key. Swift communication and emotional intelligence are the guiding principles. Being able to think two steps ahead and addressing inquiries proactively are qualities clients would appreciate. When a company grows in scale and streamlines its operations, it is equally important that they do not lose the personal touch with their customers! Feeling the presence is a form of customization!
