About Program

CYA’s Winter intersession program offers classes in Anthropology or Archaeology. Our intersession courses are short-term, 3-week, intensive study abroad opportunities open to students interested in extending their semester or for a short stand alone program over J-Term.

Anthropology of the City: Exploring Modern Athens - Learn about how urban environments have been studied in the social sciences and how we can apply those ideas to Athens. This course studies with how the city intersects with gender and sexuality, inequality, migration, sustainability, and more!

Voula Field School - Gain excavation experience by participating in the Voula Field School, an excavation at the site of Aixonidai Halai, one of the ancient municipalities on the coast of ancient Attica. This course includes 3 crucial components: on-site excavation, class lectures, the lab-work, dealing with the study of the material culture.

An Adventure Filled 3 Weeks

CYA's "Anthropology of the City: Exploring Modern Athens" winter term class was one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. Classes rarely took place in the physical classroom - instead CYA took full advantage of its convenient location in the heart of the city and sent us out with our professor to explore it. We analyzed different spaces all over the city from neighborhood farmers markets and shopping malls, to street art in political neighborhoods and even Greek nightlife in one of Athens’ party districts. This class is the perfect blend of academics with fun and adventure, and taught me that there isn’t a single space in the city that can’t be the site of interesting anthropological research. This class would appeal to students with a wide variety of interests, including not only Anthropology but also Urban Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Architecture - or simply anyone interested in learning about what life in Athens is like. As someone who spent winter term and the following semester with CYA, this class was the perfect introduction to my time in Athens and the lessons I learned from it about Greek culture and what it meant to be an Athenian were invaluable to me. The Anthropology of the City class fits a lot of material and adventures into a short period of time, so even if you are not staying for the semester, I guarantee you will still get a lot out of this short but sweet study abroad experience with CYA.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
While taking the Anthropology of the City course, I found that I had a lot of free time. I would advise future students of this program to take advantage of your short time in Athens, as there is so much to see and experience. Conquer jet lag early, and don't spend much time in the apartments. Get out and explore while you can!

She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the American College of Greece. What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory was going to Crete with CYA in 2017. I met so many of my closest friends (who are still my closest friends) during that trip and saw so many amazing sites. It was a great mix of museums, archaeological sites, stunning beaches and traditional villages. I'll never forget it!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working for CYA has provided me with a deepened perspective of the school. As a student, I was impressed by the warm, caring atmosphere that the staff and faculty provided for students, and as an employee I felt it even more. Interacting with students it the best part of the job for everyone at CYA!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I love hearing stories from students, and many of my friends here in Athens are CYA alums who have fallen in love with Greece and decided to move here. So many alums have told me that their CYA experience has helped them discover what they'd like to do with their lives in the future, and I can say the same for myself!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

As a CYA alum, I'd like to go back to Meteora, Ioannina, and Metsovo. I had a great time on this trip and I'd love to go back to experience it again. I'd also love to go to Andros, a trip that I didn't take and regret it. I've been to the island myself since and I feel like going with CYA would be even better!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I think the familial, friendly, warm atmosphere at CYA makes it so unique. All of the staff and faculty love getting to know students and forming bonds with them. Staff and faculty will go out of their way to help students and make them feel at home in Greece. We care about each and every student! Also, we care about each other as staff and faculty.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think that CYA provides a well balanced program that offers students academics of an extremely high quality, amazing new travel experiences, access to some of the most important sites in the world, and a family-like environment here in Greece. When I was a student, I couldn't find any other company that provided all of these things, only CYA!
