My first month In Shanghai!

I applied to to the fewer things back in May, and within a couple days I had heard back and got an interview, and from there I have gotten everything I needed for this experience. Pub quizes during lockdown really helped with getting to know those you'd been travelling with, and from it I made some of my better friends that really supported me.
Even during these very uncertain times, TFT was always helpful on updating me with the recent news on Visas and travel restrictions, and doing all in their power to ensure I got here ASAP.
Once arriving in China, I completed a 2 week quarentine where both my School and TFT stayed in touch looking after my welfare and any problems I had. My school have been great at helping me with accommodation, travel arrangements and silly questions I had, especially with the language barrier.

I couldn't have asked for anything from TFT, they have really been great and I would urge everyone wanting to travel abroad to teach to choose the TFT. Not only are they professional, it's great to have been talked to in a laid back friendly response which eased any worries and no question was ever to stupid.

This is the best decision I have made to come out here, I've met the nicest people and China is absolutely stunning! Definitely something to look back on in 10 years and smile that its happened.

Take the leap, you won't regret it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just the bite bullet, leave your comfort zone and jump into the unknown.

I arrived in China just in time!

Well, I'm still coming to the end of quarantine at my hotel in Shanghai, but so far so good. I feel lucky to have been able to make it out just in time during a difficult year.

The Fewer Things have been incredibly supportive since March, when I applied for the teaching position in Shanghai, and I couldn't have asked for more. From up-to-the-minute updates from the UK visa centres and the latest on Corona, we we guided diligently through each step of the now more complicated process of acquiring the visa to work here.

I have been in constant touch with the school who have been brilliant and have reassured me in terms of working commitments and accommodation. I look forward to being fully settled, but I cannot recommend The Fewer Things enough. Once you sign up, you don't need to worry about a thing.

I feel very lucky to have found them in what seems to be a very crowded TEFL scene.

Good luck with your application if you decide to go with TFT - you won't be disappointed!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do your research, but if you have your heart set on a particular experience, leave it to TFT - they will find you the ideal placement for you.

Graduate Programme

From day one of being accepted onto the graduate programme, I had an enormous amount of support from the team at TFT, both in the U.K. and once in China, I never felt I was alone and was never left without any questions unanswered.

I started out in Shanghai in 2018, where I worked for Pacican Academy, working on the outskirts of downtown Shanghai, the commute to my school was only 15 minutes on the metro or I could walk there on a nice day. I taught 26 periods per week, including English, art and drama class! I was worried in the beginning about teaching something other than English, but along as you have fun with it, you will be fine.

Winter break is amazing!! I got to travel to so many different countries in Asia including: Thailand, Vietnam and Lao. Travelling for me, was more important than the teaching as I had never really been out of the U.K. before going to China.

I would recommend this programme 100 times over!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I messed up my visa documents before going and was running out of time, I didn't think I'd make it to China for the summer camp and was panicking so much, I finally got the approval through and booked my flight 1 day before going!

Guangzhou

I started my journey in Guangzhou, China and it has been a great move for me personally and professionally. I have had many ups and down on the run up to China and once here, my coordinator at The fewer things has been a great help and always answered any questions or helped me overcome any issues I had.

The teaching is fairly relaxed and my school doesn't require me to be here when I am not teaching, its great to get out and explore the city and find new things to do almost every day. I've made friends for life here and the thing I really liked about The Fewer Things is that we were all put in a group chat around 6 months before departing, we all helped each other out with the TEFL and once at the summer camp in Beijing (which is very intense). I have recommended and will continue to recommend this programme to everyone I speak to about teaching abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be over prepared and take the advice of your coordinator and stick to the deadlines you get to process your documents and complete your TEFL. It can be stressful getting everything ready on time.

Teaching in Changsha

Applying through The Fewer Things was perhaps the best decision I made when commencing my journey as a TEFL teacher. The level of initial support, information provided and post placement support was seamless and highly appreciated. As someone who applied for the February placement, I did not feel in anyway disadvantaged due to not attending the summer camp as I was placed in a great school where I was made to feel at home regardless of the fact that I was the first and only only foreign teacher for the second term. Jaemi went the extra mile in providing information regarding the social scene where I met some amazing people. I would recommend TFT to anyone considering teaching abroad as they make what might normally be a daunting and strenuous process, memorable and enjoyable.

Professional organisation with a very personal touch

From the start The Fewer Things were very friendly and welcoming. I felt supported throughout the application process, with help from the organisation readily available as required. The steps necessary for a successful application were clearly laid out in steps manageable for a final year university student.
A representative from the organisation was there to meet us all at the TEFL training, answered questions and made us more prepared as we got to China. The in-school summer camp was strenuous as someone without previous teaching experience, but made teaching in Shanghai feel a lot less stressful.
Once my teaching contract was underway, The Fewer Things were always available on short notice to help clear up misunderstandings and act as a point of contact between the teachers, schools and higher education boards. Always very organised and effective.

What would you improve about this program?
The summer camp was the only part of the program that was surprising. More information on this step would be my only recommendation.

Foshan!

I was placed in an amazing school in Foshan, China. There is around 15 other foreign teachers at my school and it is like one big family. The support I received from Jaemi at TFT was great and he was always on hand with any of my questions or problems before and after I arrived in China.

The highlight for me was the Beijing summer camp which you attend before starting the placement. It is quite intense but it left me feeling confident for my first day at schools, so I can see why it is set up that way. On the evenings we'd get to go out in Beijing and it was a great way to meet new friends, two of which are placed at the same school as me!

Beijing Life

Hi, I'm Richie and I was one of the first ever teachers to do this programme back in 2018, I have been in Beijing ever since and I can not recommend it enough to people who are looking to come to China.

The support you receive from the moment you apply all the way through to you being in China is incredible, Jaemi from TFT still checks in with me regularly even after nearly 2 years of being here.

The best part about this experience for me has been meeting new people and immersing my self into a culture I knew nothing about. It has been such a great opportunity and I am glad I pursued it.
