About Program

Urban Environments Design specialism responds to the unprecedented urban transformations occurring during the past few decades in Hong Kong and China. The specialism aims at the development of a high level of intellectual and practical mastery of the analysis and design of diverse urban environments in the region, with broader implications for urban contexts worldwide. The approach of the specialism is based on an understanding of socio-cultural dynamics of the regional context. It turns this understanding into new design strategies and design interventions.

The specialism seeks to achieve these aims by learning about:
• urban ecology and strategic approaches to cities
• typologies of public space
• how to design public spaces and urban interiors
• urban systems and sustainable strategies

Bridging the East and the West

With its geographical position in bridging the East and the West, the Program of Urban Environments Design allows its students to develop their design strengths with a uniquely international cultural awareness at both professional and social levels and encourages me to enhance my urban strategy knowledge and identity system thinking, which focuses on strategic breakthroughs and practical design with a wide range of objects. The ellectives from other programs has also created many successful cases in the fields of publishing, design, space and exhibition. Its efforts in promoting different culture exchange and it’s wide range of impressive projects and research from graphic to space design gives me a lot innovative ideas and concepts to understand the relationship between culture, design and business.

Opening minds towards future

The school of design at Polyu is well know for having very successfull projects that become reality, with innovation and creativity, seeking for improvement of real problems.
The master of urban environments design course in very well structured, the subjects have a wide understanding of different scales, going from the interior to urban and systems. Besides the main subjects, the electives are diverse and mix different areas, making the students interact with people from other majors, building up a better answer for a question through different perspectives put up together.
The specialists are always pushing the students to think further and outside the box, without slowly imposing any ideas like the traditional way to teach (at least in my country). This allows the students to test and grow according to their own interests areas.
The experience of being in Hong Kong is very constructive and unique due to the conveniency of the city and the diversity of spaces and cultures, plus, having the priviledge of having a studio in the school with so many facilities makes the experience even better.
