About Program

You won’t need the luck of the Irish to have an unforgettable study abroad experience in Dublin. By directly enrolling at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), you’ll have the joy of befriending the Irish, who are known for their hospitality. You’ll feel more at home knowing that Dublin has a young population (more than half of the city is under 25).

We want you to feel at home in Dublin, so we will do everything we can to help you integrate into life in Ireland. Enrolling directly in an Irish institution through IES Abroad provides you with a chance to sample the local academic culture while still benefiting from the support of IES Abroad staff and housing.

Trinity College Dublin offers a wide variety of challenging courses and appeals primarily to those students who are ready for the challenge of adapting to an entirely new academic culture that requires significant independent work.

Amazing Semester in Dublin--Trinity College Dublin

I have nothing but great things to say about my program in Dublin. IES organized housing for the students; I lived with 4 other girls in a comfortable apartment in Ballsbridge (a safe neighborhood with lots to do, 10 minutes from Trinity College Dublin). Aside from the prestige of the university, one of the benefits of Trinity is that it is in the heart of Dublin. Many restaurants, theaters, pubs, and shops are within walking distance from Trinity. In terms of academics, Trinity is very welcoming to international students, especially the history, art, and writing departments. What really made my semester special was meeting locals and international students from all over Europe. I met students through the clubs I joined, which I highly recommend. I joined the hiking club, soccer team, and co-ed choir, activities which I don't have as much time for at my home University. In addition to the school, living in Dublin was an enriching experience. I loved getting to know a new city! The IES staff were always willing to give us suggestions of places to visit in the Dublin area and throughout the country.

What would you improve about this program?
I absolutely loved my program, but I would have liked more transparency in the academic system. I had extreme difficulty finding out how to navigate Trinity's academic system (even after directly contacting advisors at Trinity) before my program started. It was a challenge just to find out which courses were available in a given semester, and what pre-requisites were necessary for enrollment. The education system and course structure at Trinity are very different than in the U.S., so it would be very helpful to have resources available before the start of the program.

Best Semester

I studied at Trinity College Dublin through IES Abroad. The IES staff was very helpful - they brought me to the urgent care clinic when I sprained my wrist! I got to live with other students on my program, so it was nice to have that social group within my larger experience in Ireland. The academics at Trinity were wonderful. I took four English courses, and all of my professors were always engaged and interesting. Dublin itself is a great city to study in. It's large enough that there's always something going on, but not so large that it's unmanageable.

What would you improve about this program?
Registration at Trinity was very stressful. It's helpful to go in with an idea of what you want to do, but be flexible!

Questions & Answers

Hi Cara! After studying abroad in Ireland, I definitely wished I had the opportunity to be there longer or spend my whole college career there. I would suggest looking into international programs to enroll into for certain colleges in Ireland, like University College Dublin or Trinity College. That way, you'd just be an international student at the college for your entire college career instead of...
