CEA-Berlin, Germany

Spending the summer in Berlin with CEA is the best decision I've ever made! The classes were not too challenging and there were several field trips for a more hands-on experience with what we were learning. There were lots of cultural excursions included with CEA and with Berlin School of Economics and Law, including to many of the monuments in Berlin, day trips to Potsdam, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and a weekend trip to Prague. Berlin is an amazing, beautiful, fun city full of history. There is always something to do. It is a great place if you want to enhance your German skills as there are students and residents from all over the world, but classes at BSEL are taught in English and it is easy to get around using English and very little German if you go there without knowing any German like I did! Berlin is also a very cultural city, with all sorts of food, and it is still relatively cheap compared to other European cities!

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing I would really change about this program - I like how it was a 4 week program and fit easily into my summer, but looking back I would love if it could have been longer so I could've spent more time in Berlin!

The Best Experience of My Life!

I spent the summer studying at the Berlin School of Economics & Law. Berlin is so diverse and it's so easy to feel at home there! CEA's support throughout the study abroad process was excellent. It was such a relief not having to worry about finding housing, enrolling in the school's program, or buying my own transportation pass! In addition to having group activities during the week (bus tours, waltz dancing lessons, sightseeing), our program also included a weekend trip to the Czech Republic. Our onsite specialist Kristin was amazing and always helped us with anything, whether we were feeling sick and needed to see a doctor or if we were looking for new restaurant recommendations. CEA's Summer Program in Berlin is absolutely the experience of a lifetime and I wish I could do it all over again!

What would you improve about this program?
Everything about the program was great--my only recommendation is to make it a little longer...4 weeks just went by so fast! There are so many things to do and see in Berlin, and I felt that a few extra weeks would have been great.

McKenzie is a junior at Concordia University Nebraska, majoring in Marketing and minoring in World & Intercultural Studies. She has been a member of university's Dance Team for three years, and also enjoys playing the piano.

Why did you pick this program?

I started learning German when I was 14, so I definitely wanted a program that was based in Germany. Since I'm a Marketing major, I was also looking for a program that offered business classes to help me gain more knowledge of the industry. The summer program at the Berlin School of Economics and Law was the perfect program for me, fitting both of my needs!

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

I always tell my friends that going abroad is a must! I've been to 30 different countries, and I have gained so much knowledge and had experiences that I would have never gotten the opportunity to pursue if I hadn't gone abroad. You learn so much about yourself, become even more independent, make lifelong friends, and truly have the best time of your life!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Berlin is such a big city, so make sure you experience as much as you can! Do things you can't do back home. Try new foods that the locals recommend, go on a boat tour down one of Berlin's many rivers, take waltz dancing lesson... these are all things I was able to experience during my time in Berlin and they are memories that I'll always look back on!

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

For my Marketing of the Automobile class, we all took a field trip to the Volkswagen Factory in Wolfsburg. I'm not a huge fan of cars, but it turned out to be a pretty amazing place! It's practically a whole city inside one factory. They have live bands, restaurants, boat tours, playgrounds, museums, souvenir shops, ice cream stands, hotels...anything you could possibly imagine!

What was the hardest part about going abroad?

I'm not great with directions, so I was always worried about getting lost. Berlin is a huge city with a very large underground subway system, and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out which train to take and in which direction. Thankfully, I only got lost once or twice and the locals are very friendly and always willing to give you directions!
