About Program

Adventure and education collide during our three-month journey through the rugged peaks and stunning valleys of Peru, Ecuador and Patagonia. Navigating Ecuador’s Amazon jungle by canoe, we explore the effects that petroleum drilling is having on the Amazon and its people. Settling into a homestay in Ecuador's Otavalo region, we take conversational Spanish classes and immerse ourselves in the language and culture of the region. Treading in the footsteps of the Inca, we gain insight into an enduring culture as we explore the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Settling into a Quechua community, we understand the importance of sustainability and conservation of the local llama population. Paddling through the floating Uros islands of Lake Titicaca, we understand an ancient way of life. Trekking through the towering peaks, stunning glaciers, and turquoise waters of Torres del Paine National Park, we uncover a newfound appreciation for the pristine environment that surrounds us.

ARCC South America A

I absolutely loved my gap semester with ARCC. This program has awesome traditions and curriculum. I have learned so much not only about myself but about culture, social justice, and everything about life in general. My group leaders made the experience so amazing by always providing such strong support. I was so thankful to have them as my leaders. This trip was so amazing for my mental health and allowed me to grow in so many ways. I can’t wait to implement all the things I’ve learned into my daily life at home.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I was to do this trip again, I think it would be interesting to not use my phone at all. When we got our phones back, I used it everyday because I had a service plan but sometimes I wish I would have been more present.

ARCC Gap: SouthAmerica A

It was an awesome adventure! We got experience the culture and we learned so much of the history. We hiked a lot and visited so many places, which were so worth it! Getting to visit and work with locals was an amazing experience! The volunteer work was hard, but what came out of it was also worth it! The guides were fantastically amazing and were so knowledgeable! The people that I journeyed with have become irreplaceable friends that I would continue seeing even after the trip has ended! I would definitely do another gap year with ARCC because it helped me improve and become more confident in myself.

What was your funniest moment?
After some heavy lifting, we had a wheel barrel race with people inside the wheel barrels with the Andean people. It was a laugh and a ton of fun!

ARCC South America

This program really gave me the support and opportunity to grow both on a personal level and as a global citizen. Traveling in a group setting allowed me to figure out my place within that group and as a leader. ARCC has given me some of the most amazing experiences and the best friends I will continue to grow with in years to come! I can now go into college and the future excited about the independence I gained as well as the cultural education that comes with being exposed to new people and places. I have travelled with other gap year companies and ARCC is by far the best!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was surprised at the amount of care and attention the leaders and staff gave us. Whenever we needed anything extra, it was always given to us.

ARCC- South America A

This was my second semester with ARCC. I had another amazing experience! I grew as a leader, as an individual, and as a student. The leaders were very supportive and connected with everyone on the trip. My group had a mix of some very active and less active members. In addition, since this trip was abroad, there was a mix of camping and staying at hostels. We stayed at many unique locations where we were able to get to know the locals while having an amazing experience at the place we were staying. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would recommend this trip to anyone on the fence.

What would you improve about this program?
My only feedback is very minor, but it would be about our time in Chile. This year, during Covid, we did not have the opportunity to go to Ecuador. Therefore, the time spent in Chile was extended. In Peru, we were able to really dive deep into the culture and the communities. In Chile, we stayed in less places and for longer periods of time. This led to some more relaxed and open days. During the week of quarantine in Chile, we stayed on a ranch. We worked on the ranch for one day and went for one hike. The days were left open for the students to plan activities. This was great for self-growth, but I wish the days had some more meaningful experiences.

ARCC South America

I loved my ARCC trip to South America; we got to visit so many amazing places and meet great people. I really enjoyed the cultural immersion aspect, ARCC has really strong connections to the local communities which allowed us to dive deep into the culture and learn so much from the people we met along the way. The staff was super supportive all around and the itinerary took us all around Peru and Patagonia to the most gorgeous places in nature. I highly reccomend ARCC for any student looking to learn more about themselves and the world around them.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future ARCC students would be to really take advantage of every moment on your trip. It goes by so fast so it’s important to be present all the time and push yourself out of your comfort zone for the most rewarding experience.

ARCC South America

This trip was absolutely amazing. We went to so many cool places and I made so many memories with my group. I loved getting to hike and see super cool mountains and ruins. This trip has changed my life. Opened my mind to so many new ways of thinking and broadened my view of the world. Getting to experience the cutures of where we went was truely an once in a life time experience and if given the opportunity I would do it again. I can’t stress how amazing this program is. I would highly recommend to all of my friends and anyone interested in a gap year.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most interesting thing I ate was Guinea pig. In Peru they call it Cuy and it was marinated in a local herb called wakatay. It was a very good experience and it was very tasty

ARCC SAMA

The best part of the trip is the cultural experience and immersion. We got to explore a variety of unique aspects surrounding Chile and Peru such as the language, food, spirituality, and traditions. Overall it was a very diverse experience. I left feeling like I was able to get a well rounded view of the countries we visited and that we got to try a little bit of everything. For future participants, come prepared for altitude sickness with electrolytes, anti nausea medication, etc. and be sure to carefully filter water.
